Why Spring Is The Time To Lay A Resin Driveway

The virtues of resin driveways are numerous, and if you are thinking of having one installed, there is no time like the present.

Spring is the best time of year to lay any driveway and now we are in March, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. Quite apart from the fact that your drive might look in need of urgent relaying after all the effects of winter weather on it, the meteorological conditions of spring are ideal for replacing it.

For some surfaces, late spring or early summer is the best time, since that is when asphalt or concrete will cure properly in warm (but not too hot) temperatures and fairly low humidity, whereas the hottest and most humid part of summer (usually July and August) risks drying it out too much and leaving it cracked and brittle.

Equally, trying to lay such a surface in cold weather could lead to the surface crumbling and wet conditions would make the base layer too wet and not bind well.

However, while that may be the case for a solid surface like asphalt, is resin any different?

The answer is yes – but with a caveat. It is true that a resin driveway can, in theory, be laid at any time of year. It is not as sensitive to the prevailing weather conditions and temperatures as some other materials. However, it should be done when it is reasonably warm and dry, which means spring is one of the times when conditions are more likely to be suitable.

It certainly doesn’t need to be the 20-30 degrees C that is ideal for concrete or asphalt driveways, however. Instead, it needs to be at least five degrees and dry for the resin to cure properly. A skilled installer will check it is not too wet to do this. The fact that the weather won’t need to be so warm means installation will be possible even on a chilly March day.

The issue with cold weather is that the curing process takes longer, although this can be accelerated using a catalyst. But more of it will be needed in such circumstances. And, of course, in winter there can be lots of rain about, so a longer wait for the surface to cure may be risky. This means that while it can be done in winter, it’s not the ideal time.

Of course, the fact you can get a resin driveway laid whenever it is dry and warm means you can also do it in summer even when it’s quite hot.

However, that would mean waiting longer and, of course, that is the time when most people like to have maintenance work done, including driveway relaying and other work such as patio installation, so it is harder to find a time when the installer doesn’t already have a job booked in.

Since you can do it now before everyone else who needs a new driveway and is using other materials can get theirs installed, there is no good reason not to take advantage of the opportunity March offers to get your resin driveway fitted now.
