If you are considering replacing the driveway at your home this spring or summer, you may want to explore your options for resin bound driveways, which are a fantastic alternative to traditional driveway materials like concrete in a range of situations.
Let’s start by covering the basics. What are resin bound driveways and how do they differ from other driveway surfaces?
The main difference is that a resin bound driveway is a completely porous surface, which means water can flow through the surface of the driveway and into the ground beneath, eliminating puddles and pooling that can cause an issue in some locations.
Even though you might think that puddles aren’t a problem, in the winter these patches of water can turn to ice, which would create a hazard for anyone walking on your driveway.
When is it best to choose a resin bound driveway?
Resin bound driveways tend to provide a bit more grip than other options, which makes them particularly suitable for slopes or even for steps leading off the driveway or into your property where you likely want to have more grip underfoot or under your wheels.
Because the aggregate used for resin bound driveways is fixed in place, you won’t have issues with any of it shifting or moving like you would with a gravel surface on a sloped driveway, for instance.
As they are better for drainage, they are also a great option if you find that you get puddles forming on your driveway when it rains.
What other properties do resin bound driveways have?
All of our resin bound driveways are laid with a 100 per cent UV stable resin bound mix, which means they won’t be affected by exposure to daylight. We also provide a ten-year guarantee for all our resin bound driveways, giving you peace of mind in the quality of your new surface.
Another potential benefit to opting for resin bound driveways is that this material can be overlaid onto certain surfaces.
This can significantly reduce the time it takes to lay your new driveway, as well as the cost, as it won’t be necessary to remove your old driveway surface before your new one can be laid.
How long does it take to install a resin bound driveway?
While every job is different, for most standard residential driveways, we can lay the new surface within a day or two. We’ll give you a timeline for your project when you reach out for a quote.
The process is relatively simple, although each step is very important. We always begin by performing a thorough pre-clean of the area that will become your new driveway. Next, the area is dried with a blowtorch to allow us to apply the adhesive primer on the surface.
From here, the resin, hardener and aggregates are mixed using a specialist machine, after which the new surface is applied to your driveway and hand floated.
One of the best parts is that your new driveway will be ready for use within four to five hours of our team finishing their work!
