Can Resin Driveways Withstand Heavy Weather Damage?

Your driveway, patio and pathways need to be built to last and withstand the environmental and traffic conditions they are expecting to face for years to come. Resin paving has a particular robustness that makes it perfect for long-lasting driveways.

The use of resin in combination with a wide range of aggregates can create driveways with the elegant look of gravel or stonework but with far more robustness as well as sustainable drainage.

A driveway needs to survive in all weather conditions, withstanding the wind, sun and the rain throughout the seasons, and the unique properties of resin allow them to achieve just that.

Sustainable Drainage

In the UK, especially, one of the biggest causes of damage to driveways is water damage, which manifests through cumulative erosion or the freeze-thaw cycle.

The latter, which causes cracks in impermeable surfaces through water entering cracks in the surface and making them bigger as frozen water expands, is a major reason why concrete and stone driveways can sometimes receive remarkable levels of damage over winter.

One solution to this is to have a surface that is designed to allow water to be absorbed by it, and resin-bound paving is an effective sustainable drainage solution (SuDS).

As a highly porous surface, resin-bound drives reduce standing water and the effects of frost or potential waterlogging. As the water freely passes through, it is far less likely to freeze.

Not only is this beneficial for reducing flood risk and assisting with planning applications, but it also means that heavy rainfall will have little to no effect on the resin surface and will ensure it can last longer.

UV Stable Resins

There are a lot of different resin mixes, but the best ones for resin drives are UV stable. They are designed to be exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods of time without discolouring, breaking down or causing damage.

Not only does this prevent fading, but it also means that they last longer at their absolute best, ensuring that you get the most from your investment.

Temperature Resistance

Some solid driveway materials are sometimes vulnerable to major fluctuations in temperature, as they create uneven expansions and contractions that can lead to cracks in weak links and joints.

This is not the case with resin-bound surfaces. The resin is flexible and works with the aggregates within to ensure that it does not degrade or crack as a result.

The longer the resin stays in one piece, the more likely it will avoid degradation, which means that it not only looks its best for longer, it lasts far longer than some other materials.

Weatherproofing Is Easy

Resin drives are low maintenance, typically only requiring occasional gentle cleaning and resealing every few years to maintain their sustainable drainage qualities.

Whilst some surfaces such as natural stone require constant protection from potential oil staining, damage from parked cars and issues with changeable weather, resin surfaces typically require very little to be done in the name of preservation.

Minimal maintenance is more likely to be done, which further helps protect it from weather damage.
